What a great and productive year we have had!!

The SFSA has grown immensely this year so I just wanted to throw out a little year in review. Some notes, reminders, and stuff we did.

The Big Picture

An overview of what we would like to do in 2010

1)    Storage unit at GGP Waller st. for weekend skate days. The sf skate club will use these ramps for lessons and general public skating on Sat and on Sundays when weather permits. Events and fundraisers for the SFSA

2)    Continue to coordinate and develop office staff and procedures. Including email list, Internet updates monthly newsletter, accountant, lawyers ect.

3)    Hold events that raise funds for parks such as indoor skate nites at kesar auditorium on days it is not used for any other event. This continual usage will strengthen the skate communities bond with the rec and park and will raise funds,

4)    Helped with the Chili Bowl / city permit fiasco.. getting the city to realize skate events are good for its community was a hard one, but we got toad his permit and with the help of bob palacio, are looking into collaborating on some future skate events at potrero. Next year will be much easier.

5)    Continue working on Mission bay skate park. It feels as if we need to concentrate on MBSP for a while. We need to raise neighborhood awareness and support, and also bring in some business support which is located in this neighborhood

6)    Continue to work towards getting 3rd st a real skate area with water and a bathroom, lights and police monitoring. Tall order…

7)    Hunter point Skate Park remodeled….

8)    Crocker Skate Park redeveloped. With a small amount of reconstruction crocker park could be a great skate park. For the price of an over haul crocker could be a repolished gem, ask me more later

9)    Get the municipal skate law changed. Code 100 is skate unfriendly and is used more by police to harass than to impose order on skaters. Some skaters and city staff are working on getting that stuff worked out. We will be exploring this more throughout the next year.

10)Indoors skate park. A must for the future of skaters in sf. This venue could support so many different avenues for our youth such as art, theatre physical fitness, video/film arts… we all know it’s the right move lets get some real city folk involved

11) Skate able art sculptures in GGP we are exploring the idea of working with the AAC and the de young museum in creating skate able sculptures a temp art project that can exist until the permanent skate park is built

12)Make enough money at events to support our office and Internet, decks and t-shirts ECT.

13)Finish working on the design for ggp by may 2010

14)See central freeway SP move forward into construction by jun 2010

15)Corporate skate event to raise money for parks on pier 30 32

16)Create a ten mini park plan for safe spot/ skate spots.  Small skate spots close to transit and close to housing….

17)In 09 we had one skate shop open, downtown skate supply, for a total of ten skate shops, with 5 opening in the last two years. No other shop has gone out of business during the recession, though some have struggled none went under. Sunset surf and skate is in the middle of moving locations so they don’t count J.

Highlights from ‘09

We had many successes and some set backs this year here are some of them:

1)    design phase completed for central freeway skatepark. Now we wait for drawings to be finalized and building to begin once funding is available.

2)    Designer picked for Golden Gate Park skate park – spectrum skateparks outta Canada. Good folks

3)    Office space for our monthly meetings was found. The good folks at the Neighborhood Parks Council has let us use their office space at night for our meetings, this was vital in growing our membership and staying consistent. Eventually we will be able to afford office space in the daytime!!

4)    Phil Ginsburg was appointed head of rec and park. For those whose don’t know, the previous guy sucked at helping us out. Phil is very encouraged by our group and has helped so much. He broke his shoulder at potrero skate park his first day skating with us.. he’s  a trooper and a valuable asset to our cause.

5)    Lost and then found our portable ramps out on treasure island. That park it seems is a lost cause. Say no more!

6)    Storage for our ramps will be moved to GGP. This will allow us to hold events at the site of our future park,

7)    Donated ramps to after school programs. Two to be specific. And now that we have found our ramps, we can donate more to others.

8)    Held 9 monthly meetings this year. Most yet.

9)    Held our first fundraiser and raised 900.00  with 100.00 donated to GGP.

10)Christmas party rocked the d structure store on haight, first of many.

11)Second collaboration skate deck with creation skateboards was released, sold out quick, more on the way. We really don’t make money off these decks but it is good to spread the word. Get one if ya see one cause that will be the only one left!!

12)Lots more participation this year from our membership. If we double this effort we will undoubtedly get ten times more done… you figure the math.

13)Many more non-skating community members joining our cause. It seems we are gathering community support for our work in India basin and mission bay and hunters point. Let keep it up.

 Common Goals for 2010.

A more detailed short list of what might be most important for our organizations growth and success for the next year

1)    get our office space organized!!!! We need to set up a system / office staff  / hours of operation ect. To get the most effective use of our time. Since we started we have been running our website and all e mail stuff from my house. For us to grow we need to have a public space to go to so others can give their time to the SFSA. this can be shared with other skate oriented organizations such as SLAG ,SFSC .

2)    set up committees to work on specific projects. since we have grown the amount of time per project has increased. We need has specific groups to follow the progress of every project, such as: after school programs, different skate parks i.e. GGP, Central freeway SP, Mission Bay SP, fundraising, skate events, office work, and the list grows.

3)    We need to find an indoor space for a skate park. Another committee!!! A small group dedicated to reaching out to city agencies to find resources to operate an indoor facility. The redevelopment agency, health agencies, children services, arts programs ect.

4)    Other things we need to focus on would be fundraising for daily ops., events, promotion, products,

5)    Increase our membership and e mail base. In the past we have held events and have left out the details of collecting e mails and info for information distribution.

6)    Monthly newsletter!!! In the past I have made attempts at writing a newsletter, a sorta update on the parks. Since we have grown we need to have our newsletter grow also. We need to add information about events and people in the skate community, focus on our local shops and. this alone will raise our membership just by word of mouth.

7)    Website. We need to keep our website updated and fresh. Integrate our newsletter into the website and make it more than just me hacking at the keyboard

8)    Get our stationary stuff together… you know we don’t even have business card!!!! How can we promote ourselves without business cards, letterhead ect. Once again office organization will be key this year.

9)    We hope the city comes to depend more on our organization to supply skate activities to the public and thereby support us with city funding, this is possible and can be achieved but only with more organization and accountability.

10)WE NEED AN ACCOUNTANT. Something else that is very hard to come by. Lets try and find someone who can keep our bills and finances organized, and yes we have bills.

Individual Goals for 2010

It is always been our goal to provide as much opportunity as possible for members to donate time and effort to our cause. Lets make this a year of action and total victory for our skate community.  Ask yourself. “ what will I do today to promote our cause, to achieve our common goals.’ Lets make 2010 our biggest victory by taking action, no matter how small, for the benefit of our skate community. Staying positive in the face of negative people and groups who oppose our work (believe me they are out there), these obstacles will only strengthen us in the long run.  Lets build an organization that gives more than it receives while remembering that it is the complete sum of each individuals effort that creates lasting value for the whole of our community.
